The Daily 5 / CAFE Menu
Our literacy time this year will incorperate "The Daily 5", a literacy program developed by two sisters, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. In this program, students develop a sense of independence through 5 parts of literacy. These 5 parts are:
Read to self
Read to someone
Word work
Work on writing
Listen to reading
We will work on all of these components, incorporating them one at a time and very gradually. The first one we will work on is Read to self. We will learn the three ways to read a book (read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story); learn how to pick a "good fit" book using the IPICK system; and build our stamina reading to our selves.
This picture is of our blank CAFE board. CAFE stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand vocabulary. We will learn each of these methods and become "experts" of each. Our class will add on to our CAFE board as the year goes on.
The sisters describe the daily five as "more than a management system or a curriculm framework- it is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy(Boushey and Moser, 2006)."
